The following day, Edward and I went to the office with our bags. He also pulled some strings with his attorney to discuss setting up my will, just in case. Jason Jenks came over early. He was an older gentleman, about Phil’s age with bright blue eyes and a friendly smile.

“So, you’re the beautiful Bella that I’ve heard so much about,” Jason grinned, shaking my hand. “Why are you with him when you could be with me.”

“Stop flirting with my girlfriend, Jenks,” Edward grumbled, tossing a pencil at his attorney. “You’re here to work.”

“I know, I know. Besides, my wife would kick my ass,” Jason chuckled. “What can I do to help you, Bella?”

“I don’t know if Edward told you my story, but I’m my half-sister’s legal guardian. A little over a year ago, my mom and my stepfather were in a car accident. There was a drunk driver and they were killed instantly,” I explained. “I don’t have any other living relatives and I want to make sure that my sister is taken care of, in the case that something happens to me.”

“Bella, you’re young, healthy,” Jason argued.

“So were my parents,” I snapped back. “Phil had high blood pressure, but he was healthy. My mother? She suffered from migraines around her time of the month, but she was healthy. They were killed by some asshole who didn’t think to before getting behind the wheel after he had too much to drink. Accidents happen and I can’t have my sister be thrown into a situation where she’s lost another parent.”

“Okay, Bella,” Jason nodded. “What do you need from me?”

“First off, I want to set up a trust for my sister to make sure she’s provided for, similar to what she has now from my parents,” I said. I handed him a copy of my parents’ estate and paperwork from when they died. “I don’t foresee myself dying anytime soon, but I want to make sure that she’s okay.”

“I’ll take a look over this and fashion a similar document for you, Bella,” Jason explained.

“I also want Edward to be Katie’s guardian,” I said. “He adores her like she’s his own and I want her to be with someone who will love her, unconditionally.” Jason blinked to Edward with wide eyes. He apparently knew of Edward’s struggles with his emotions, but not necessarily of his complete past. “Edward’s a part of my family. He is my family.”

Edward took my hand, threading our fingers together. His eyes were soft and he gave me the most adoring smile. I could tell he wanted to kiss me, but we made some very clear rules that our relationship would remain away from the office. People knew we were together, but we didn’t flaunt our relationship or make people uncomfortable.

“Okay, that works,” Jason nodded.

“If something happens to Edward and me, I want Katie to be in Edward’s parents’ care,” I said. “I may be paranoid, but …”

“I get it, Bella,” Jason grinned. “It will take some time to get things set up since I need to look over the information you’ve given me from your parents’ passing. I hope to have something for you in a month or so.”

“Okay,” I sighed. “Is there a way that we can make note of Katie’s guardianship relatively quickly, though? I’d like to have that set in stone.”

“If something happens to you, I’ll make sure your wishes are followed,” Jason said, reaching over and taking my hand. I nodded. “Here’s my card. If you need anything, just give me a call.”

“Thank you,” I smiled.

Jason stood up, grinning at Edward. “Keep her around, Edward. I like her. She’s smart. Probably smarter than you.”

“More than likely,” Edward snorted. “Thanks for coming in today.”

“Anything for my favorite client,” Jason smirked. “Though, you’ve been replaced, Cullen. Bella’s my new favorite client. You are a distant … very distant second.”

“I can feel the love, Jenks,” Edward deadpanned. “Go earn your retainer, asshat.”

Married to the Mob: Fighting for Freedom Teaser

Sitting in my office, the Friday before the benefit and nearly a week since Maas had accused my wife of shoplifting, I was reading several proposals for investment opportunities. One had absolutely no merit and I did not know how it got to my desk. I missed Angela. Her husband had taken a new job and they had moved out to California, Silicon Valley. I had yet to find a competent replacement, but my current temp had potential. The phone rang on my desk and I picked it up. “Cullen,” I barked.

“Sir, there’s a Jason Jenks here to see you,” said the temp assistant, Rhonda.

“Send him in,” I replied. “And can you get us some coffee?”

“Of course, Mr. Cullen,” Rhonda said.

I stood up, smoothing my tie. Rhonda, a petite African-American girl with a bright smile and a strong work ethic, opened the door. “Thank you for bringing Mr. Jenks to the office. If you could bring this file to my brother and …” I handed her file of the awful proposal.

“And get you some coffee,” she nodded. “I will. Anything else, sir?”

“No, Rhonda. Thank you. Actually, if you want to take off early, you can. I’ll be leaving after my meeting with Mr. Jenks. I’m going to spend time with my wife and son,” I smiled.

“Thank you, Mr. Cullen,” Rhonda grinned. “I’ll see you on Monday, sir. It was nice to meet you, Mr. Jenks.”

“A pleasure, my dear,” Jenks replied, shaking her hand and giving her a smarmy grin. Rhonda scurried out of the office. “She’s probably the best one out of the bunch since Angela left your cranky ass. You should keep her.”

“I think I will,” I laughed. “Have a seat, Jenks.”

We walked to the seating area in my office. I picked up a pad of paper, sitting down on a chair while he took the couch. He opened his briefcase and pulled out his tablet, along with stacks of papers. Rhonda walked back in with a tray of coffee and some savory snacks. When she left, I looked at my attorney. He handed me a thick packet. “Your updated will and trust to include your rug rat.”

“Jenks,” I growled. “My kid is not a rug rat.”

“You know I love kids … when they’re adults. And technically, he is a rug rat. He crawls around the floor … like a rat?” Jenks snickered. I gave him a glower and he just held up his hands in surrender. “Have you set up separate accounts in various aliases for you, your wife and son?”

“Covering my ass, yes,” I sighed. “Just in case something happens and …”

“You’re not going to be arrested, Boss,” Jenks snapped, arching a brow. He handed me his tablet. “Everything I’ve found about Detective Peter Maas …”

“This is very, very thick, Jenks. Can you give me the abbreviated version?”

“Okay, sounds good,” Jenks chuckled. “He was on the take.”

“Who?”

“Royce King,” Jenks answered.

“Edward, it’s Thanksgiving,” Jenks grumbled. “It’s before dawn on Thanksgiving. What the fuck, man?”

Edward was down in the kitchen, trying to stay quiet. After they returned from court, they both crashed and slept. Edward stayed in bed as long as he could, but he was anxious to get ahold of Jenks to start the beginning of his plan for his happily ever after. “I need adoption papers.”

“Who are you adopting?” Jenks yawned.

“Not for me, you idiot,” Edward hissed. “For Bella. I want her to adopt the twins. I don’t know if you heard …”

“Yeah, I did. Perez is a good guy and he told me about the case when met up for our bowling league,” Jenks said. “Adoption papers. Got it. I’ll work on that on Monday.”

“Good. That’s good,” Edward murmured. “I want to propose to her … have the kids help me …” He blew out a breath. “I need something good to come out of all of this. Bella is the only thing keeping me sane.”

“I can imagine, Edward. Do the kids know?” Jenks asked.

“I’m going to talk to them today. We’re celebrating Thanksgiving at my parents’ house. Charlie, Sue, Seth and Leah, Sue’s kids, are spending it with us, too. I’m going to pull them aside and ask if they want Bella to officially be their mother and if they were okay with me marrying her,” Edward whispered.

“Excellent plan, Edward. I’ll get the paperwork started and it should be ready to go before the end of the year,” Jenks explained. “Now, let me go back to fucking sleep. It’s still before dawn, asshole.”

“Sorry,” Edward chuckled. “But, I am a paying client. You did give me your cell phone number to call you anytime.”

“I’m changing my fucking number, Cullen,” he grumbled. “I’m going back to bed, snuggling up with my hot wife. I’ll talk to you later. Happy Thanksgiving.” He ended the call abruptly, making Edward laugh.

He went to his to-do list and crossed off ‘calling Jenks.’ Next, Edward started looking for engagement rings. He had no idea what he wanted or what Bella wanted, but something unique, special was important. He perused rings until his eyes crossed and all the rings looked the same. When he heard Bella shuffle around upstairs, he closed his laptop and began making coffee and preparing breakfast for them. She walked down the stairs, looking bedraggled and sleepy. Her hair was a rat’s nest, but he never thought she looked more beautiful. “I missed my snuggle buddy,” she yawned, padding over to him and sliding her arm around his waist.
