Falling for a Dark Soul Teaser

Alice and I were wandering around Whole Foods, in search of ingredients for Christmas Eve dinner, which was being held at my house in a matter of two days. I was woefully unprepared, panicking at the prospect of my team and Emmett’s team coming over. Alice wanted to make a traditional family recipe for some fish salad. We were following Alice’s traditions and she was raised Catholic, like me. But, her mom was Italian and they served seven fishes on Christmas Eve.

“Do you know how to make squid?” Alice asked, reading from an email she’d gotten from her mom.

“Ewww, Alice. No,” I groaned. “Squid tastes like rubber bands and eating it without all the breading … that’s sacrilege,” I shuddered. “Nope. Nope. Nope. I’m drawing a line at squid.”

“But, that makes seven,” she pouted, thrusting her phone in my face. “It goes in the fish salad.”

I read the recipe, wrinkling my nose. “If we omit the calamari from the salad, we could replace it with linguine and clam sauce. I think I have a recipe from my grandmother on my dad’s side, who was also Italian. It’s really good … filled with a lot of butter and numminess. Served over linguine with some crusty bread? That sounds much better than mini octupuses. Octupi?”

“Okay,” she said. “I admit, the squid are disgusting. It was tradition, but I avoided them like the plague.”

“So, why were you pushing the squid?” I quipped, tossing in some lettuce, cucumbers and red onions into the cart. “What do you need for the fish salad? It’s not just fish, right? I only looked at the recipe to see that, in fact, it had squid in it.”

“Here,” she said. “How about we divide and conquer? I know we need to wrap presents for our significant others. Edward is over at my place with Jasper and the rest of the guys, invading my gift bag stash. Where’s your sister?”

“She’s spending time with Edward’s parents. They’re hanging out at the Christkindlmarket,” I chuckled. “Edward and I wanted to bring Katie there, but we never had the time. With his leave due to his car accident and trying to make up for all that lost time, along with my responsibilities at MAC, we haven’t had a chance. Hell, it was a miracle to get the decorations up this year.”

“Let me call Rose and David, see if they want to come over for some holiday cheer at your place, yeah?” Alice chirped. “We can wrap presents, eat some cookies, drink some nog and watch White Christmas.”

“Call your sister, too,” I grinned. “I’ll get the veggies and stuff for the fish salad. If you could get the fish?”

“Sounds like a plan,” Alice nodded, darting off to the meat department. I picked up the vegetables for the fish salad. I also picked up the ingredients for the clam sauce along with several bottles of wine, an expensive bottle of scotch for Carlisle and some items for Katie’s Christmas stocking.

Alice met me at the registers. “I’m going to have to take out a second mortgage to pay for all this fish,” she snickered, loading it onto the conveyor belt.

“But, it’s going to taste so good,” I smirked. “Tonight, we’ll have fun and tomorrow, you’re coming over to make this fish salad. Apparently, it needs to marinate or steep or whatever.”

“I also need to figure out how to cook crab legs,” Alice retorted, wrinkling her nose. “You’ll help me, right?”

“And by help, you mean do, right?” I teased as she swiped her credit card for the fish.

“Damn straight, bitch,” Alice grinned. “You’ve seen me cook.”

“No, no, I haven’t. I’ve seen you order a lot of takeout,” I quipped.

“Exactly,” she nodded.

Sitting in the sleek, modern kitchen of Uncle Jimmy’s restaurant, I sipped some coffee. Sue was in the office, feeding Charlie so I could get some time to talk to my uncle. It had been a couple of weeks since the opening of the restaurant, a month after the christening and he was so busy, making it difficult to connect with him. Inside of that month, the popularity of the Blue Swan exploded. He changed the hours to include lunch service, but closing on Sunday for inventory and deep cleaning of the kitchen.

Uncle Jimmy demanded I come in so I could help him test out some new recipes, daily specials. I eagerly agreed and had Jake drive me and Charlie to the restaurant. “So, I heard from Victoria,” Jimmy said, sautéing some onions.

“There’s a blast from the past,” I snorted, nibbling on some cookies. “What did that slacker want? Did she want to reconcile? Apologize for being a heinous bitch?”

“She read about the Blue Swan and she had the gall to ask for a job,” Jimmy retorted.

“What did you say?” I asked, arching a brow.

“I met with her,” he said, giving me an evil grin.

“What did you do?” I laughed. “Did you torture her?”

“Psssh, no,” Jimmy snickered. “I just wanted to see how much she’d declined. She’s in her early forties and she looks like a woman in her sixties, at least in the face. She’s lost a lot of weight and she … the past two years have not been kind. She looked like she was or is a heavy drug user. Makes me look at what I have now with Sue and I’m grateful for that.” He put some chopped mushrooms into the sauté pan, flicking them with a spatula. “I’m thinking about asking Sue to marry me.”

“What?” I breathed. “You were with Vicky forever and you never even considered it.”

“That’s because, in my mind, I knew she was fucked up,” Jimmy said, adding a few pats of butter to the pan. “She was a user, in more ways than two.” He turned down the heat and looked up at me. “I saw how she treated you and how little she worked. I’m sorry about that, Bells.”

I waved him off. “We both know that Vicky was lazy. Besides, her laziness was my gain. I made more in tips than she ever did.” Leaning forward, I smirked. “So, when are you planning on popping the question?”

“Don’t laugh, but on Valentine’s Day,” he blushed. “I know it’s clichéd, but I love Sue and I adore her children. Seth is a good man and Leah … she’s such a sweet girl.”

“She is,” I grinned. “She loves you so much.” I blinked over my shoulder, ensuring that Sue wasn’t hovering. “Do you have a ring? And what are you planning to do for the wedding? A big to-do?”

“I need to ask her first,” he laughed. “But, I do have a ring. I bought it when I was going Christmas shopping, a total impulse buy. She never expected to find another man in her life, nor did I think I’d find her either. I just know that I want to share my life with Sue. Well, what’s left of it.”

“You’ll live to be a hundred,” I quipped. “Don’t be negative, James Swan!”

“I’m older than Sue. Not by much, but I’m older. With my accident and the residual issues from it … I’m afraid that I may not last as long …” he trailed off, shrugging. I hopped up off my stool and threw my arms around his waist. I don’t know why, but I started crying. I’d already lost my dad. My mom was not in my life. I couldn’t lose the last connection to my family. “Bells, hey … don’t cry baby girl.”

“I can’t lose you. Not yet, Uncle Jimmy,” I sniffled, tightening my hold on him.

He cupped my head, leaning his cheek against the crown of my hair. He held me tightly and swayed us gently. “I’m not going anywhere, Bells. I’m too ornery to die. Hell, I got blown up and I bounced back.” He squeezed me before taking a step back before guiding my chin up. “I buried my brother and that shattered my soul, even more than burying your grandparents. I loved him and he was my hero. Now, I see so much of him in you, Bells. I love you and I’m so proud to be your uncle and surrogate father.”

“I love you, Uncle Jimmy,” I whispered, kissing his cheek.

Paris

We arrived in Paris a little after midnight the day following Alice’s exit from the palace. Bella was so excited as we took a private limo from the airport to the Four Seasons, George V. Her face was pressed to the window, trying to see as much of the city as she could. “Cherie, we’re going to see Paris. I promise. You don’t need to leave nose prints on the glass,” I teased, chuckling quietly.

“Hush,” she said, blindly smacking at me. “Prior to being in Gevalia, the only time I left the country was going to Mexico for spring break. I saw the inside of bars at night and boiled my body on the beach during the day. It was fun, but not very cultured. I tried to convince my roommates to do more interesting things besides getting sloshed and finding random dudes to fuck, but I was deemed a stick in the mud.”

“You are hardly that, love,” I said, tugging her into my lap and rolling down the window. “La Tour Eiffel …”

“Oh, wow,” she breathed, her hands gripping the door. “So beautiful. Can we go up it? I mean, with you being a royal … don’t we need security?”

“We do have security. Alec is driving the car and will act as the head of security while we’re on our trip,” I explained. “We can’t be like regular tourists because of my status as a royal, but we will do as much as we can. Tomorrow … or rather, later today … I plan on spoiling you. Ever been to Chanel?”

“Masen,” she growled, turning to look at me, her brown eyes narrowed. “I don’t want to be spoiled. This trip is enough.”

“Well, since we have a black-tie event at the Louvre tomorrow evening. You need something to wear,” I smiled. “What else can I have you wear? The best …”

“You little sneak,” she huffed, giving me an adorable little scowl. “There’s a black-tie event at the Louvre?”

“Some fundraiser for orphaned children, giving them arts education and outlets for their creativity. My parents were supposed to go, but they are sending me instead since we’re in town,” I chuckled, my lips ghosting over her neck.

“I don’t want to embarrass you, Masen,” she whispered, her eyes swirling with trepidation. “I’m … not royalty. I’m not you. I’m just me.”  She shrugged, idly playing with the watch around my wrist.

“You’re not me. That would really fucking weird,” I teased, sliding my mouth up to her earlobe and flicking it with my tongue. She shuddered, melting against me as my arms slid around her tiny body. I turned her head to face me and I stared at her, smiling tenderly. “Bella, you could never embarrass me. I’m proud to be on your arm. I’ve never loved anyone as much as I love you.”

She blinked, looking at me and her eyes were swimming with tears. There was disbelief and shock in her expression. She’d been loved by her father but her sister had torn her down so much that she didn’t trust anything or anyone. She truly believed that she was a whore and incapable of being loved. With a watery smile, she slid her arms around my neck and cuddled against me for remaining few moments we were in the car. The Mercedes pulled up to the rear of the hotel, where the concierge was waiting for us.

Alec parked the car, opening the door and helping Bella and I out of the car. She managed to pull herself together, sliding her purse over her head and taking my hand. The concierge, a stuffy French man named Jacques, approached us. He prattled to me in French and I smiled softly, accepting his gushing excitement about hosting a royal in the George V. Alec produced an NDA which the concierge signed. With a curt nod, we were led up to the beautiful suite I’d booked for our three days in Paris.

“I’m going to take a shower,” Bella said. “I smell like plane.”

“It was a private jet, love,” I smirked.

“It’s still a plane, with recycled air,” she retorted, arching a brow. She glided toward our bags and tugged out her toiletry bag along with something sheer and lacy. “I’ll be out soon, baby.”

“Do you need me to wash your back?” I asked, giving her a devilish grin.

“I think I got that,” she snickered. “I am hungry, though. The snack on the plane wasn’t very filling.”

“That I can do,” I said, cupping her cheek.
