Blockbuster Ch. 16 on FFn

Bella

Flashback

“Dad, I don’t understand why you are so insistent about me going out on dates,” I argued, huffing on the couch while I waited for Jacob to come pick me up. He was taking me to a bonfire on the beach at La Push. “I should be here, taking care of you.”

“I’m fine, Bella,” Dad said “I have my cell phone and I have a night nurse coming over to check on me. Leave the door unlocked, sweet girl.”

“Why should you pay for a night nurse when I can take care of you for free, Dad,” I huffed. “I’m staying. I’ll call Jake and …”

There was a knock on the door. My dad, despite his body being ravaged by cancer and its treatment, he got up with a bright smile and ambled to the door. “Jacob! It’s so good to see you, son! How’s your dad?”

“He’s good, Charlie,” Jacob answered, shaking my father’s hand. “He’s going to try and visit you soon.”

“I hope so,” Dad nodded, his energy waning. He gripped Jacob’s arm, but Jake shook him off. I ran up to my father, giving Jacob a scowl as I helped him my dad to his recliner, which had become his bed since he could not climb the stairs to his bedroom anymore. He also refused to get a hospital gurney set up in the living room, claiming his recliner was comfortable. “Thanks, Bella. You have fun with Jake.”

“I’ll be home in a couple of hours,” I said, kissing my father’s gaunt cheek. “You have my cell phone number, right?”

“I have cancer, Bells. I’m not stupid,” Dad snorted. “I still have my mind. The cancer hasn’t spread to my brain.”

“Daddy,” I growled. “Not. Funny.” I hugged him tightly. “I love you, Dad. I can stay.”

“No, have fun. Your senior year has been awful. You deserve to have some fun,” Dad said, brushing my hair back. “Treat my girl good, Jacob.” I walked to the door, grabbing my jacket.

“Always, Charlie,” Jacob responded, giving him a smirk. “Come on, Bella.” He took my hand once I had my jacket on. He pulled me out of my house. “I know your dad is sick, but have some fun with me tonight. Drink some beer. Have a joint.”

“No, I have to stay clear-headed, Jacob,” I sighed, getting into the passenger seat of his decrepit VW Rabbit. “When I get home, I have to make sure that I’m able to hear my dad if he falls or something. His balance is not there and he gets confused.”

Jacob rolled his eyes, backing out of the driveway. “Bella, I know your dad is sick, but you’re still a kid. Cut back … hell, let’s explore what’s brewing between us.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked, arching a brow at Jacob. “We’re friends, Jacob. We went to homecoming, but …”

“Come on, Bella. I can see you checking me out,” Jacob smirked, his expression dark, predatory. He licked his lips. I shuddered, not wanting him to touch me. “You want me.”

“I want you like I want a hole in the head,” I muttered under my breath, staring out the window.

Blockbuster Update

Blockbuster Ch. 9 on FFn

I was working on the screenplay. I’d created the list of characters, along with actors I’d love to play those roles. I knew it was a pipe dream, but a girl could wish. I’d love for Chris Hemsworth to be the love interest of my main character, but he was probably out of our price-range for the movie.

Though, my mind was thinking that Edward would be a great fit … perhaps for mylove interest.

Don’t wish for that … you don’t deserve it. You don’t deserve anything.

I hated my inner-voice and how it sounded so much like Jacob. He’d taken so much from me. Too much, to be honest.

When would he stop?

Never.

I shook my head, trying to not think about my awful ex-boyfriend. I needed to focus on the screenplay. So, that’s what I did. Along with the list of actors and actresses, I also began working on paring down the scenes, picking and choosing which ones needed to be in the movie and which ones could be omitted because they didn’t drive the story along.

I wanted to keep all the scenes, as the author. But, as a movie-goer, some scenes would end up on the cutting-room floor.

It was a very tedious process.

As I was working, I was struggling with rereading the novel. It was a fictionalized version of what I’d endured from the moment my father was diagnosed with cancer my junior year of high school until I arrived in San Francisco at the age of twenty-six. Granted, the fictitious me, Charlotte, got a happily ever after with a man who fell in love with her and her son.

My main character wasn’t as emotionally stunted and mentally scarred in the novel. Besides, most readers won’t read a story if it doesn’t have a happily ever after. Long and Winding Road, it meandered and twisted, but Charlotte got her happily ever after.

Me? Not so much …

I worked for most of the morning and into the early afternoon. Seth came back, soaked to the skin with sweat. He was smiling widely and I knew he had a good time. He tried to hug me, but I pushed him toward the shower because his twelve-year-old pre-teen body was smelly.

After he’d showered, I did the same and got ready for the party at the café. I put on a red polka dot dress with a full skirt and applied my makeup lightly. “You look really good, Mom. Just imagine going to a movie premier. Do you think I’ll meet Iron Man? Oooh, or Thor?

“You never know,” I quipped, rolling my eyes at my son. “Do you know if things are set up downstairs?”

“They are. Aunt Rose said we can come down at any time,” Seth grinned, offering me his arm. “Shall we?”

“I’ll have the most handsome date ever,” I said, looping my arm through his.

“I have the prettiest mom ever,” he beamed, kissing my cheek. “Let’s go!”

Walking down the stairs, we entered the McCoffee Café. The entire shop had been decorated with streamers, twinkle lights and there was some quiet music playing. “Oh, wow,” I whispered. The décor was in the same color scheme of the cover of my novel. “This is beautiful.”

“Nothing but the best for my mom,” Seth breathed, hugging me tightly. “I love you, Mommy. I’m so proud of you.”

The café was filled with my adopted family of Rose, Emmett and their children, Lily, Maggie and Liam. Jasper was there with our friends from the publishing house, including Jason Jenks, the in-house attorney. The remaining people were employees and patrons from the café who supported me while I wrote Long and Winding Road.

Rose glided over to me, wearing a pretty purple dress. She handed me a glass of champagne. “To Isabella Swan, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, winner of Good Reads Fiction Book of the Year and now author of the newest movie blockbuster from Summit Studios, Long and Winding Road! Congratulations, girl!” She hugged me, kissing my cheeks.

“To Bella!” Emmett cheered, holding up a bottle of beer.

“To my mom!” Seth beamed, hugging me tightly.

I blushed and held onto my son, my anchor to the world. I let everyone cheer for me, but if they only knew the true story behind that novel. It was my story, fictionalized and simplified. The main character, Charlotte, dealt with only a minute fraction of the nightmare I’d endured when Jacob kicked me out of the only home my son had known.

Bella

If you’d asked me how I pictured my future, this would not be it. I’ve come so far, but I was still … so …

I don’t know.

I had dreams. I had wishes. I had a future. I was happy. Then, my life imploded.

“Bella, this isn’t working,” Jake said to me coldly. He stared at me and glowered at the little boy, our three-year-old Seth, who was my world. He was born when I was eighteen and nowhere ready to be a mother. “You need to leave and take that with you.”

“Our son is not a ‘that’,” I snapped. “Jake, I don’t have anywhere to go. Give me a few months to get back on my feet, separate from you and then we’ll go.”

“No,” he sneered. “This hasn’t been working for year. It’s time to cut our losses and you need to be out by the end of the day.”

“I have to work, Jacob,” I said. “Can you be any more of an asshole?”

“I’m giving you a day,” he smirked. “I could have just thrown out your shit yesterday while you were working and while I was taking care of that boy.”

“That boy is your son,” I hissed.

“Is he, though?’ Jacob asked. “He looks a lot like Mike Newton. You’re such a slut, Bella.”

“I can’t believe this,” I whispered. “I can’t believe I ever loved you.”

Jacob knew I’d only ever been with him. Seth, our son, was conceived the first time we’d had sex and the condom had broken. Seth was the light of my life, where Jacob was the looming dark shadow.

“You better be gone by the time I come back from work. If you’re not, I’ll have you arrested for trespassing. You’d lose custody of Seth and he’d be raised by a proper family,” Jacob muttered. “Not by slut like you.” He picked up his keys, leaving the dingy apartment we’d shared.

It wasn’t even an apartment. It was a shack on his father’s property. It had a small kitchenette, a small living space and two tiny bedrooms. It barely had indoor plumbing. There was shower stall and a composting toilet. It was my responsibility to clean it every week.

Well, we didn’t share it anymore.

I was just a piece of shit in Jacob’s eyes. I was not the ‘love of his life’ as he proclaimed that night we’d conceived Seth. I was not the mother of his son.

I was a burden.

Not anymore … I wasn’t his doormat.

Blockbuster Extended Summary and Teaser

Jacob abandoned Bella, leaving her and their son destitute. Years later, the book she wrote about their struggles became a bestseller. Edward, a film producer and former child actor, wanted to option Bella's book and turn it into a blockbuster. Falling in love wasn't part of the plan ...

What will they do when Jacob comes back?

Eight Years Ago

If you’d asked me how I pictured my future, this would not be it. I’ve come so far, but I was still … so …

My world lost its light and I was bathed in darkness once again.

Sam whimpered, putting his head on my lap. His gaze almost sympathetic and I slowly pet behind his ears. His face contorted as tears welled in my eyes. I felt so alone, so empty. I looked around my condo, surveying the destruction and I shook my head. I stiffly stood up. The door to my condo opened and I secretly hoped it would be Bella.

Unlikely, asshole. You broke up with her yesterday because you’re a fucking piece of work.

“Edward?” came the sweet voice of my mother. “Your downstairs neighbor called …” She looked around and gasped. “What happened? Were you robbed?”

I lifted my hand and let out a gruff, harsh laugh. “No,” I answered.

“Is it Bella?” she asked. Hearing Bella’s name made me choke and stumble. Esme walked over to me, guiding me to the couch. “Edward, you look … broken. Tell me, sweetheart. What happened?”

“I don’t know what to say,” I mumbled.

“Well, how about you tell me what the hell happened to the condo?” she pressed.

“I lost my temper,” I answered. “Mom, why am I so unlovable? Why do people just throw me away?”

“What are you talking about? Edward, you are one of the most lovable people I know,” she cooed, brushing my hair back. I flinched and moved away. I couldn’t handle being touched. Not now. Not ever. My mother looked confused, but she took a breath, continuing, “No one would throw you away.”

“But, she did,” I snarled.

“Who did?”

“Bella! She threw me away for a dalliance with James,” I snapped, thrusting my hands into my hair.

“I highly doubt that, Edward. She does not like him, obviously. She told me that she thought that James was a toad. Why would she …?” she pressed.

“Because, I’m not worth it. I’m not worth anything!” I shot up and began pacing since my condo could not handle anymore destruction. “The only thing I’m good for is to be used and abused. A punching bag, a living sex toy … I’m nothing, Mom.” I slid down the wall and screamed. “The one good thing in my life … she threw me away.”

My mother sat down next to me, pulling me into her arms. I struggled against her, not wanting her comfort. She wouldn’t stop holding me and I just gave up. I clung to my mother as I completely lost it. She didn’t say anything, but she did hold me. I’m not sure how long we sat on the floor, but she pulled away, wiping my tears. “Edward, in all the years you were my son, you’ve never let your walls down. You always kept everyone at arm’s length, even your father and me. You never allowed yourself to grieve, to cry, to feel that pain from your childhood.”

“I needed to protect myself,” I said, my throat raw. “I didn’t want to be hurt.”

“And now, Bella broke through those walls,” she said.

“But, she …”

“I doubt she threw you away, Edward. Did you give her a chance to explain?” she chided.

“She tried, but it sounded like excuses,” I snapped. “She’s no different that Tanya.”

“That’s not fair, Edward. If I had to guess you lashed out and you left before giving her an opportunity to tell you what had happened,” she sighed. “Edward, I love you more than words can describe. You are my child, even though I didn’t give birth to you. You are not even remotely close to being disposable.”

“Then, why did those assholes hurt me like they did?” I asked.

“Are you talking about Bella or those awful foster families?” she asked sympathetically.

“Both, I guess,” I muttered.

“Bella didn’t throw you away,” she admonished gently.

I raised my shaky hand to face and felt the tears on my face, on top of the goose egg that was forming on top of my forehead. What just happened?

“Man, Cullen needs to pull the stick out,” James said coldly.

I whirled around, glaring at the man who had single-handedly ended my relationship. “You caused this,” I sobbed.

“Oh, bull shit,” James scoffed. “Cullen is a fucking pussy. I know that you two are together …”

“Not anymore, James,” I cried, interrupting him. “Because of your actions, you trying to kiss me, he just ended it. His ex-wife cheated on him in this office and now, it would appear that history had repeated itself.” I stumbled, falling down, and leaning against the front receptionist desk. My heart was stammering against my ribs. I had broken him. James’ actions had broken Edward. He looked so … shattered.

The elevator doors opened and I hoped it was Edward, but it wasn’t. Emmett stepped through, holding up bags from Portillos.  “I have food,” Emmett sang as he walked into the lobby. “What the fuck happened?”

“I tripped and fell. James helped me up and we were both slap happy. James thought it would be a good idea to try and kiss me. Edward saw that and …” My voice cracked, curling myself up into a tight ball.

“James, you crossed a line,” Emmett said, sitting down next to me and enfolding me in his arms. I leaned against him, gripping his shirt as allowed myself to fall apart.

“This is my fault? It’s Edward who’s a fucking nutcase!” James argued. “We’ve been pulling insane hours to get this advertising campaign done, Emmett. We still have a shit-ton of work to finish it …”

“You don’t,” Emmett said coldly. “This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. You’re fired. Bella didn’t feel comfortable enough to work with you, but she did despite her trepidations. You crossed that firmly drawn line by trying to kiss her.”

“She wanted it,” James argued, leering at me angrily. “Good luck trying to get this campaign done without me. It’s my ideas, my work. Jane wanted me.”

“No, she wanted Bella and she got Bella,” Emmett said. “And if you try to encrypt the work we’ve completed, you will be sued for breach of contract and you get to explain to Jane and Eric why their campaign didn’t go live. Pack up your shit and get the fuck out of the office …”

“You’ll be hearing from my attorney,” James snapped at us, stomping away and grabbing his computer and tablet. He threw the flash drive at me. The metal edge hit me near the eye and my tears came anew. James left the office and he scowled as the elevator doors closed.

AMDFT Chapter 45 on Stars

“How’s the fish, Bella?” asked Billy, Jake’s father.

“It’s good, but I’m still not really hungry,” I said, pushing the plate away. “I’m …”

“It’s okay, sweetheart,” he said, giving me an understanding smile. “You just need to eat something before you take your pain pill.”

I sighed, pulling the plate back and forcing a few bites down my  throat. I didn’t really taste anything. Everything seemed like ash and dull since I left Rochester. Jake, who had been in the ICU, practically demanded to come and visit me after my surgery. He saw me and I told him what Esme had said, her words that rolled around in my head, shattering my already fragile confidence. Despite his injuries, Jake comforted me, along with my father. We also made arrangements for me to leave New York.

Being there was too much. Toxic, really.

I was laying on my back, tears streaming down my cheeks. My father had stepped out to make a few phone calls and arrangements for our return to Brooklyn. The problem was that we had a second story walk up. I couldn’t walk up the stairs. Linda’s apartment wasn’t much better.

“Bells,” I heard.

I sat up, wiping my face and seeing Jake in a wheel chair, pushed by Seth. “You need to rest, Jake. You’re recovering from major surgery.”  His face was still ashen and he had lost weight.

“So are you,” he smirked, taking my hand and frowning when he saw my bare finger. “What’s going on, Bells? Why aren’t you wearing your ring?”

“I had to take it off when I had my knee fixed,” I answered petulantly.

“Talk to me, Bells,” Jake commanded softly. “Charlie told me briefly what happened, but I want to hear it from you.”

“I’m not good enough,” I whispered. “Esme doesn’t think I’m good enough for her son.” I blinked up, tears streaming down my face. “And I’m not, Jake. I’m a mess. I’m not strong. I’m worthless and I don’t deserve him. So, I’m listening to Esme.”

“Fuck, no …” Jake growled. “Don’t get me wrong, but Esme is a bitch.”

“I thought she cared about me,” I hissed. “Instead, I get my heart ripped out and stomped on by her. How can I ignore that? I’ve lost two mothers, Jake. One from an unforeseen complication of pregnancy and the other from being a hateful, cruel, vindictive bitch. I loved Esme.”

“Do you love Masen?” Jake whispered.

“I do, but sometimes, love isn’t enough,” I whispered back. “I hate that …”

Jake squeezed my fingers and he tugged out a cell phone. Sliding his finger across, he pressed a button. “Dad? Yes, I’m feeling much better … no, I’m not upset that you couldn’t make it out. I get it. After this accident, it will be a long time before I drive in the snow … Look, I have a friend and she’s in a bit of a bind.”

After talking to Billy for a few minutes and my father talking to him, as well, we made arrangements for me to fly out of Rochester and to the Pacific Northwest. Seth was flying out with me, helping me in my wheel chair and driving me to La Push, to the Quileute Reservation. It was a long trip. I was achy and tired by the time we pulled up to the green ranch-style home. A tall man, with russet-colored skin and a beamingly white smile, greeted us. I could see the familial relationship to Jake immediately. I also noticed he stayed on the front porch.

That was three days ago.
