I was spacing out, standing in the kitchen. My son was at school. It was the last day before winter break and over those two weeks off, Seth and I were packing up what we weren’t using in the house, preparing it to be put on the market. It was still decorated for the holidays, with Bear taking his usual spot underneath the Christmas tree, snoring loudly. Our dog definitely thought he was a present, but it made for some adorable pictures on my phone.

Today, I knew that Edward was giving our victim impact statement today and Jacob would be sentenced. I was trying not to think about it. Jacob needed to be placed firmly in my past and with Edward’s statement made on our behalf would hopefully do that. So, I was working in the kitchen to focus my attention on anything other than the monster who’d made my life hell for years.

“Knock, knock,” came the deep voice of Emmett.

“In the kitchen,” I replied. Bear woofed lowly, wiggling his butt when he saw my friend and adoptive older brother. Emmett tossed him a treat from his pocket, sauntering inside. “Shouldn’t you be with your wife, babyproofing your house?”

“Rose and Jasper’s parents are over and well, we don’t get along,” Emmett shuddered. “Too judgmental and all that shit. So, Jasper is there playing referee and babysitting his sister because if I’d stayed, I’d send Rosie into early labor or would have knocked my father-in-law into next Tuesday.”

“Yeah, don’t do that,” I snickered.

“I also wanted to check on you. How are you doing? Jacob is being sentenced today,” Emmett murmured, putting the full box into the living room. “Are you okay?”

I wrapped up my mugs, just to give my hands something to do. “For the most part, I’m okay. I’ve been talking a lot to my Edward and Caius, trying to come to grips with all that he did to me, to all of us. Yes, I’ve struggled, but I landed on my feet. Leah? Emily? They’re going … my heart breaks for them.”

“But, Jacob is getting his just desserts. He’s more than likely not going to have another day of freedom,” Emmett smirked evilly. “I wonder if he …”

“Jacob was an animal, but no one, no one, should have their choice taken away,” I snapped, glowering at him. “I know what it’s like and it’s a nightmare.” Tears welled in my eyes as I sat down heavily on the stool. I could feel the beginnings of a panic attack. Emmett crouched in front of me, taking my hands. He talked me through my calming techniques until I was able to breathe normally and the panicky feeling dissipated. I was grateful that I didn’t have to resort to taking my anti-anxiety medication. “Sorry about that. I … I’m still struggling with how to feel about Jacob’s conviction and eventual sentencing.”

“You should be overjoyed! Your abuser is getting what’s due to him!” Emmett exclaimed, dragging me into the family room. Bear hopped up onto the couch, curling to my side, recognizing my distress. I buried my fingers into his soft fur. “But, it makes sense that you’re struggling.”

“I’ve had several sessions with my therapist and I’m on the phone, nightly, with Caius,” I shrugged.

“You’ve become close to him,” Emmett smiled.

“My father, who died when I was in high school was irreplaceable, but Caius has stepped up to become a father-figure for me and adoptive grandfather to Seth,” I said, smiling gently. “He was so lonely before, but with us, he found a family.”

“We’ll happily take him. He’s an amazing man, with so much love to give,” Emmett agreed. “He even stepped up, taking a few shifts with Rose when I had to be at the café and Jasper was out with clients. The kids love Uncle Chaz.”

“Uncle Chaz?” I asked, arching a brow as I scrubbed behind Bear’s ears.

“Liam couldn’t say Caius,” Emmett snickered. “So, Chaz was adopted as Caius’s nickname. Caius said it made him feel ‘cool’. But, when we have the baby … it’ll be more of a gurgle or cry.” He gave me a wry smirk.

“I’ll bet you’ll be happy when the baby’s born,” I said.

“I’ll be happy when Rose is no longer in danger. When she goes in to give birth, she’s having her tubes tied since my vasectomy reversed itself,” Emmett sighed. “I love having a large family, but I love my wife more. I can’t lose her.” He looked at me, an adorable grin on his face. “Now, enough heavy. How are the wedding plans coming?” He picked up my left hand, wriggling my finger that my engagement ring sparkled on.

As I was working on the outline for the last novel in the series, my cell phone rang. I saw Edward’s number. I picked up my phone, smiling as I answered. “I thought you were working, hunkered down in your editing suite.”

“They let me out for good behavior,” Edward snickered. “Alec said that the room smelled. I’d grown nose blind to my own funk. Besides, I got a phone call from the US Attorney’s office. Amanda, the paralegal, left me a message since I’d had my phone on silent. They’ve moved up the trial date for Jacob.”

“When is it?” I asked, closing my laptop.

“Right around Thanksgiving, the week following,” Edward answered. “Amanda said she’d emailed you, but hadn’t heard back from you.”

I opened up the laptop and loaded up my email. “I found it. It went to spam,” I frowned.

“The timing is …” Edward sighed. “It’s not ideal.”

“We can make it work,” I shrugged. “I wanted to celebrate Thanksgiving up here in San Francisco since Rose can’t really travel.”

“Okay,” Edward said absently. “I can fly up the week of Thanksgiving. I should be done with the movie edits. We’re getting ready to release the first trailer. It’ll be posted on YouTube and released with several big movies coming out leading up to Thanksgiving. After that, we’ll release the second trailer. Alec is working on that as we speak with Elliott since I’m banned from the editing suite.”

“Wow, things are moving forward,” I breathed. “With all the drama, I’m shocked that Summit didn’t scrap the project.”

“Aro is invested in this movie and despite the difficulties we had to deal with, it’s still trending well with focus groups. If anything, the drama inadvertently hyped the movie up a bit more. Have you ever heard of the quote ‘there’s no such thing as a bad press’?” Edward questioned.

“Yes,” I answered, dragging out the word.

“Well, the situation brought more publicity to the movie,” Edward said. “Working with Summit, we’re spinning it to benefit us, benefit the movie. Seth is being kept out of it. I made sure of that. He’s been through enough shit.”

“I don’t know,” I mumbled. “I mean … I want to close this chapter and move on to the next. With the publicity of what happened, it’ll just keep the wound open, festering.”

“I know and I understand. Before we move forward with any publicity, you can approve or deny them,” Edward said. “Do you trust me?”

“I trust you so much,” I whispered. “But, that compromise sounds good. I just … hate all of this.”

“Me, too, gorgeous. However, we should be able to go into the new year without the baggage of Jacob weighing us down,” he breathed.

“Here’s hoping,” I chucked humorlessly.

“Now, onto something interesting,” Edward snickered. “I’m switching to FaceTime. I want to see your face when I tell you this tidbit of gossip.”

Driving back to the house, we all changed out our dress clothes. Bella checked in with Rose and Emmett while Seth went scrounging for something to eat. “Son, we’re going for a picnic,” I quipped.

“I’m hungry. I couldn’t eat breakfast because I was too nervous,” he said, his mouth full of some cereal. He looked at me. “You’re not going to cook, are you?”

“One time,” I huffed. “I burnt dinner one time!”

“You burnt dinner to a crisp, Edward,” Bella teased. “It wasn’t salvageable. The smell didn’t leave the house for well over a month. Even now, there’s a hint of burnt smell.”

“I promise to not cook,” I snickered. “I can chop things and then we can go exploring …”

“Good thing you have a bunch of nosh in the fridge,” Bella quipped, pulling out containers of pasta salad, antipasto, vegetables, crackers, meat, and cheese. Tossing in a few bottles of water, some soda, and cookies, we loaded up into the Range Rover. I navigated the freeway, arriving at Griffith Park. Bella giggled.

“What is it, Mom?” Seth asked.

“It was about a year ago that we had our first date. At this very park …” she responded, looking at me with a fond, loving smile. “A year …”

“Actually, our anniversary is tomorrow,” I grinned, parking the car.

“Yeah, you need to go out on a date or something,” Seth said. “Without me. I love you both, but if I learned anything about all this is that you need cherish the ones you love. Mom, you’ve been a rock for me and my fears, dealing with my mood changes, but when was the last time you did something for yourself? For each other?”

“Seth, when you have children, you will learn that your world revolves around them. I’d do anything for you,” Bella said. “As would Edward.”

“I know that. Especially now,” Seth argued as we got out of the car. We grabbed the picnic basket with a blanket that I had in the storage of the back of the SUV. We walked to a beautiful meadow and sat down in the shade a large tree overlooking the city of Los Angeles. Before we could get comfortable, Seth shot me a look.  “Dad, I think I left something in the car. Can you come with me?”

“Stay with your mom. I’ll get it,” I offered.

“I’m not sure where I left it. Mom, we’ll be right back,” Seth said, grabbing my arm and dragging me away from a perplexed Bella. She shook her head, spreading out the blanket and pulling out the containers.

“What did you forget, kiddo?” I asked.

“I didn’t forget anything. Mom came downstairs before I could I talk to you,” Seth said, arching a brow at me.

“You’re as subtle as a Mack truck, Seth,” I laughed.

“I wanted to apologize first,” Seth whispered, looking at me warily. “I was awful to you when we got here – a total asshole.”

“You weren’t very nice, but I get it. You’ve been dealing with a lot of crap,” I reasoned, wrapping my arm around his shoulders. “I wish I could take away the pain and aftermath of what you’re dealing with what happened over the summer.”

“You have, Dad,” Seth grinned, hugging me. “I wasn’t being fair. I lashed out at you when I should be lashing out at the douchebag who took me. I’m sorry.”

I kissed his forehead. “I love you, Seth. Nothing will change that,” I murmured. “Your recovery will take time. Hell, look at your mom. You’ve seen how she still struggles. And it’s been how many years since she had to deal with Jacob’s abuse?”

“True,” Seth agreed. He worried his lip, looking blankly at the car ahead of him.

“I’m not negating how you feel, but Jacob is the worst type of abuser. He was a narcissist with delusions of …” I trailed off. “Pardon my language, but he was fucked in the head because of how he was raised. The whole nature versus nurture thing … he was groomed to be an abuser, to use women in such a heinous way. He was and always will be a monster.”

“You can say that again,” Seth snorted humorlessly. “I know that you won’t abandon me or that you forgot about us while you were working. I was just so angry at the world.” He stopped, taking my hand. “The other thing I wanted to talk to you about was … when are you going to marry my mom? I’m proud to be a Swan, but I know I want to be a Cullen. So does she …”

I grinned crookedly. “Funny you should ask that. Bella hinted at this being a year since our first date and that this was where we came.”

“But, you said that your anniversary is tomorrow,” Seth said, arching a brow.

“Exactly. You said it yourself, we should go out on a date and tomorrow … I want to treat your mom to a day she won’t forget,” I replied. “Ending in a proposal.”
