Hand in hand, we walked to the dining hall. The meal smelled delicious, making my stomach rumble. We smiled at the young people who had been in the sky box, the prison, as they greeted us. As much as I didn't want to be a leader, people were looking to us for guidance. I also some of the girls salivating over Edward. He must have noticed them. He moved to slide his arm around my waist, pressing his lips to my temple in a very public display of affection.

Hands off, girls. He's mine.

We got our meal, a delicious venison stew with some apple cobbler. It was a recipe found in the Mount Weather database and it was delectable. After we ate, we spoke to some people and listened to their concerns about the problems on the Ark. We also talked about possible solutions for our time in Mount Weather.

After those conversations, Edward and I settled at one of the tables with some hot apple cider with Rose and Emmett. "I don't know about you two, but I'm bushed," Rose yawned, leaning her cheek against Emmett's bicep. "The technology in here is old and in massive need of repair. Having it sit unattended for almost a century didn't help matters. The hydroelectric generators kept the vital systems going, but it needs a major overhaul."

"Long story short, my repair teams are going to have a lot of work to do," Emmett chuckled humorlessly. "As a result, I'm making a decision to not stay in the presidential race."

"Not chancellor?" Edward asked.

"The term chancellor is aligned with the Ark. We're not on the Ark. Not anymore," Emmett shrugged.

"President Cullen has a nice ring to it," Edward snickered.

"So does President Rosalie Hale," Rose grinned. "Or President Isabella Swan."

May We Meet Again Teaser

Early the next morning, Emmett, Rosalie, Lauren, and Tyler packed up the rover to head back to Mount Weather to track the hurricane. Edward went to tell Alice that she was going with them so she could be safe from the weather, riding with Jasper. Eric and Mike were rounding out the group, heading back to Mount Weather.

I was sorting through provisions in case we needed to hole up in the drop ship for the storm. I was also beginning to pack up the supplies that The Ark had sent down with us. Mainly, it was medical supplies and equipment that would be compatible with the items in their medical bay. But, their batteries hadn’t been fried. I would have an actual state-of-the-art hospital, complete with x-ray machines, defibrillators, and anything else a doctor could possibly ever need.

Rose walked into the drop ship, plopping down next to me. “It’s been too long since we’ve had a chat. I noticed that you and Cullen are buddy-buddy,” she said bluntly. “Are you bumping uglies?” She gave me a grin, arching her brow.

“Really?” I deadpanned.

“Come on! You and Cullen were holding hands and acting all coupl-y,” she said. “Are you and Cullen a thing?”

“If you mean together? Yes, we are,” I blushed, closing the bins with the medical equipment.

“Are you with him out of guilt or are you really with him?” Rose pressed.

“We’ve always had this adversarial relationship. Don’t get me wrong, we were far from close on the Ark. We mingled together because of our families, but we never took the time to get to know each other. He thought I was entitled, and I thought he was a jerk. When in reality, we are very similar. We were too stubborn to see it.”

“But, he threw you in jail,” Rose snorted.

“He’s also the one who got us to the ground. With my mother’s help, of course,” I replied. “We talked about that the first night away from camp. He apologized and together, we’re moving forward. Will it be all warm fuzzies? Probably not, but he’s been here for me since he caught us trying to help Angela and her baby. He transferred to the prison to protect us. Pike and his cronies were as corrupt as the day is long.”

“Emmett told me a little bit,” Rose muttered. “Halsted had a hard on for you and was …”

“Yeah,” I gulped. “That’s why Edward worked his ass off to get us down here, Rose.”

May We Meet Again Update

The next morning, we got up and packed up our campsite. Tyler and I doused the fire while Emmett and Bella tried to figure out a way to cross the river. After some wandering, they found a location where the river trickled down to a stream that we could cross without any fear of being devoured by some insane water monster.

We ate what was left over from dinner before leaving our campsite. Alice was limping, but she was still moving. By mid-day, we were halfway to Mount Weather. We also saw proof that the terrain we were crossing had once been a city. There were street signs, abandoned stores and crumbling homes. Bella used a Geiger counter to check the radiation levels and whatever wasn’t too irradiated to touch, we took. Namely, we found handguns, ammunition, hunting knives, pots, pans, utensils, and some other camping gear. We also needed some clothing, but the fabrics had disintegrated from years of exposure to the elements and radiation.

We also found several neighborhoods. In one of the houses along the way to Mount Weather, we found some more backpacks. It made it easier to carry our finds.

In one of the deserted homes, Bella was standing inside a nursery, staring blankly at the crib. The furniture was covered in a fine layer of dust and what could have been a cheery room was covered in a pall, with grey walls and decaying wood. I walked over to her, jumping back when I saw what Bella was staring at. Inside of the crib, there was a skeleton of a child. “Fuck me,” I gasped.

Her lips curled up in a sad grin, but her eyes were trained on the skeleton. “This baby and its family never stood a chance,” she whispered. “The first of the bombs went off in the Ohio River Valley. The radiation coated this neighborhood … this baby … knew nothing but pain.”

“Now, it’s at peace,” I murmured, picking up a tattered blanket and covering the remains. “At least, I hope it is.”

“Could you imagine living during this time?” she asked, shuddering visibly. “Watching everyone you know slowly die from radiation poisoning?”

“There were some bunkers that could withstand the bombs,” I said. “If they were able to survive that initial blast, they could check periodically if the air had become less irradiated.”

“But, we haven’t seen any indication that there are humans on the planet. The biggest living creature we’ve seen was the creepy water snake,” she argued, turning to leave the nursery, and walking through the darkened home.

“I saw some deer and a few moose,” I explained. They had been some fucked up deer and the moose was ginormous. I damn near pissed myself when I saw it strolling through a parking lot of a strip mall.

“If we could get our hands on a moose or a deer? That could feed us for …” Bella murmured. “We’d be able to dry the meat and we’d have protein. Real protein … not plant protein.”

“I take it that you enjoyed the rabbit stew Lauren made?” I asked, grinning crookedly at her.
