Worth the Fight Teaser

Edward was organizing his kitchen, getting settled into his new apartment. After he got the keys, he loaded up his SUV with his clothes, kitchen supplies and personal effects to decorate his place. After he got inside, he went grocery shopping to pick up healthy foods. Eating room service was not necessarily good for his workout regimen. He couldn’t run as far or strength train because of the limitations that Carlisle had put on him for his head injury.

As he was putting the food away, his phone rang. Sliding his finger across the screen, he put it on speaker. “Hello?”

“Masen! It’s Emmett! What are you doing?” Emmett bellowed.

“I’m organizing my new place and trying not to go batshit crazy,” Edward snorted.

“You got a new place?” Emmett asked.

“Yeah, I signed the paperwork last week. I spent the past few days moving in and getting settled. The line at the DMV was killer,” Edward laughed. “Do you want to come over? I’m trying to load up my fridge with healthy food and …”

“Send me the address. Jasper and I will be there in a half hour,” Emmett said. “Looking forward to it, man. Do you need anything? Never mind. We’ll bring over some nosh. See you in a bit.”

The phone call ended abruptly, leaving Edward flummoxed. Emmett was a very chatty guy, but his conversations flitted from one topic to the next. Shaking his head, Edward finished putting away his groceries and went around his place, picking up any random crap from the floor. Since it was so new, there was very little out of place.

He did light some candles around the place, since the apartment did smell like fresh paint. He was looking at his computer, checking his email and paying some bills. The intercom buzzed. Walking to the doorway, he saw Emmett and a blonde man standing in the doorway. Emmett waved goofily at the security camera, making Edward chuckle. He buzzed them in, leaving his door open.

A few moments later, Emmett, who was larger than life, entered the apartment, with a smaller man. “Edward, my man, awesome digs!” Emmett boomed. “Very rustic. Your décor?”

“No. I purchased a furnished place because I wanted to make sure that Seattle was a good fit for me,” Edward replied. “Water? Soda?”

“Pssh, I’m not training today. I’m drinking beer,” Emmett said, putting a six pack on the quartz countertop. The blonde put two pizza boxes on the counter. “Jasper, this is Edward Masen. Edward, this is my brother-in-law and best friend, Jasper Whitlock. He’s also the attorney for the gym. The lawsuit he’s bringing against Jacob Black is going to be sweet!”

“I swear, Em, you have no sense of tact,” Jasper sighed, shaking his head. “You can’t talk about it. Nondisclosure agreement, asshat.” Looking at Edward, he held out his hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Edward. You’re all the gym can talk about. Quite the buzz.”

During a rare moment of calm, Edward pulled out his cell phone. It was the end of his first week at OHSU. He was tired and exhilarated at the same time, but was making friends and becoming more and more comfortable with his new position. Esme was a close friend, but he was also growing friendlier with Mira Kai and Jackson Peterson. He was also impressed at the level of knowledge that medical students and residents had with their patients. In addition, the rapport among the staff was friendly, open and one of mutual respect.

Shaking his head, Edward found Bella’s number and quickly dialed it. “Hello?” she responded, her voice breathless.

“Hey, gorgeous,” Edward smiled. “Did I catch you at a bad time?”

“I just got home from physical therapy. I walked on the treadmill, Edward,” Bella squealed. “It wasn’t pretty, but I was walking … in a sneaker and a huge brace … but walking! One step closer to starting my new job!”

“Congratulations, my love,” Edward breathed. “How’s your pain level?”

“It’s pretty bad, so I took some heavy-duty pain medication,” Bella said. “I just got out of the shower and I’m going to take a nap while Jake is at school. Am I going to see you? I miss my boyfriend.”

“I was hoping to take you out, introduce you to some of the attending physicians from the emergency department. They go out to some pizza joint every Friday and I was wondering if you wanted to come with me?” Edward asked.

“What time?” Bella asked in reply. “I want to know how long I have to nap. My pain pills are kicking in.”

“I’ll be by to pick you up a little after seven, Bella,” Edward said, chuckling at her slight slurring of her words. “I promise to get you back early.”

“I want to stay with you. Carlisle was sneezing like a mad man when he dropped me off at physical therapy. I think he’s sick,” she yawned. “Can I?”

“My house is your house, Bella,” he said, a crooked grin spreading over his face and wishing that she’d stay with him permanently. “Sleep well, baby. Love you.”

“Love you so much more,” she slurred.

Edward hung up the phone, chuckling quietly as he put it into his pocket. He worked the rest of his shift and verified the plans with the attending physicians. “You’re coming, right, Masen?” Jackson asked, his beaming smile making him much younger. He was a tall man, six-seven with a bald head and a thick dark beard.

“I’m picking up my girlfriend and then I’ll meet you there,” Edward answered. “Order me a beer?”

“Stella or Guiness?” Jackson snickered.

“I’m Irish. Guiness,” Edward smirked, chuckling quietly. “See you in a bit, man.”

The One That Got Away Teaser

After the first class, Bella was on a high. She felt amazing and powerful as she taught the packed class of almost one-hundred students. They were excited, polite and eager to learn. The discussion they had was engaging and she was pleased with the level of intelligence among her students. It was a three-hundred level class, designed for juniors and seniors. The maturity and intelligence were a given, but it still surprised her.

Walking from the lecture hall, Bella went to her office in the library. She plugged her computer into its docking station and walked to the break room. Swiping her lunch box, she pulled out her meal and a piece of paper fluttered to the ground. Bending down, she saw a note from Liam and Lucy, hand-drawn and very sweet.

Dear Bella,

We know that you’re scared about your first day of school, but you’re going to be awesome! You’re going to be a cool teacher. Everyone wants to be in your class!

We love you!

Love,

Liam and Lucy

Below the note was a cute drawing of Bella in front of a class, smiling warmly at her students. Liam and Lucy had drawn themselves, waving excitedly in the windows of her classroom. She clutched the picture and grinned lovingly down at it. “From your kids?” asked an older woman, a coy grin on her face.

“Yes,” Bella nodded. “They knew I was anxious about my first day.” She folded the note and put it into the front pocket of her lunch box. “I’m Isabella Swan. I work here in the library and teach Contemporary Romantic Literature.”

“I’m Paulina Rowen,” she said, shaking Bella’s hand. “I’m one of the department chairs for the English department. My specialty is British Literature and introduction to English composition. One of the prerequisites for creative writing. Sarah said that you may teach that class next semester.”

“It’s a possibility,” Bella chuckled. “It’s nice to meet you, Paulina. Sarah told me about you when I interviewed. I’m sorry about your loss.”

“Thank you, Isabella,” Paulina said, giving Bella soft smile. “It was such a sudden loss. One moment, I’m laughing with my husband and the next moment, he’s in the morgue.” She sat down at the table, an ancient sadness crossing over her face. “I love him dearly and will always continue to do so. It’s weird to start another school year without him. He taught in the music department.”

“Music history and the concert choir, yes?” Bella asked. Paulina nodded, taking out her phone and showing her a picture. “He was very handsome.”

“He was,” Paulina chuckled, caressing his face on her phone. “But, enough of my wallowing. How was your first class?”

“It was amazing,” Bella replied. “I think this semester is going to be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to see their work, hear their thoughts and challenge their minds with my assignments.”

“I read your syllabus, and it will be challenging for these students. I think you will be an asset to the department,” Paulina beamed. “I like how you’re utilizing both the online component and traditional teaching methods. The students will latch onto that. And if you need any help, I’m more than willing to do so.”

“I do need help setting up the gradebook. Sarah said that it was recently changed over the summer and she’s not familiar with it,” Bella said.

“Let’s enjoy our lunch and then I’ll get you settled with the gradebook,” Paulina nodded.
