Feedback ...

I'm in need of feedback. This is the first I've written in nearly a year ... should I continue?

Chapter One

Bella

June 29th, 2019

I watched my sister and her new husband, Jasper, dance on the parquet floor. Alice looked like a cupcake of epic proportions with a dress that practically engulfed her with more sparkles than one of those sparkly vampires I’d ogled over when I was a tween. She was blissfully happy with her soulmate, beaming up at him giddily as they shared their first dance as husband and wife.

I should have been happy.

Don’t get me wrong, I was. My sister deserved nothing but all the happiness in the world, but I had an empty hole where my heart used to be.

The man who I thought was going to be my forever, my soulmate … he’d decided to play hide the sausage with his assistant.

In my bed.

On the brand-new fucking sheets that I’d bought.

There was a lot of body oil involved, and suffice it to say, the sheets were torched. Along with the mattress.

And the ex-forever.

Pffft, I wish.

I’d be in jail for murder if I’d torched Jacob after he’d fucked Nessie in our bed, staining the sheets with their disgusting body oil. But I think it would have been justifiable. My dad would have helped me hide the body. Jacob, despite being his best friend’s son, was dead to him since he’d broken his baby girl’s heart.

Hell, my dad, Chief Charlie Swan, threatened Jacob’s life when he had the gall to come back to the scene of the crime, begging for me to take him back when Nessie dumped him for Jacob’s boss’s boss. Charlie leveled his rifle at Jacob, aiming for his dick as Jacob sobbed like a bitch baby.

His tears were a hit on TikTok. My post went fucking viral, and Jacob became of laughingstock.

And you’re not bitter at all, Bella. Nope. Never …

“Here’s to love,” I slurred, holding up my champagne flute in the direction of my younger sister and her hubby. “Give him ten years and he’ll fuck you over, just like Jake fucked me over.”

“I think you’re cut off, Bells,” said Jasper’s older brother, Edward, as he took the flute from my hand.

“Party pooper,” I grumbled.

Edward was absolutely gorgeous, with chiseled features, a jaw that could cut glass, piercing green eyes that were emphasized by chic-looking glasses and riotous bronze hair. He and I worked at the same school in Seattle. I taught high school English to juniors and seniors and Edward was the resident science nerd, teaching AP Chemistry and AP Physics.

“Now, now, “ Edward snickered, sitting down next to me gracefully. “Don’t rain on our siblings’ parade. It’s not every day that they get to have their fairy tale happily ever after.”

“The fairy tale is a lie,” I said, arching a brow at my friend. “Yes, I agreed to be the maid of honor, but when I did so, I was blinded by fake love thanks to Jake, the snake. And then, he …”

“I know what he did, Bells,” Edward replied placatingly. “He’s an asshole and you deserve better than Jake. But don’t shut down your heart to what could be.”

“Don’t be getting all mushy, Cullen,” I scoffed, hiking up the purple strapless gown my sister forced her bridesmaids to wear. “You’re a scientist. You’re supposed to think with this.” I pushed my pointer finger into his forehead. “Not this.” I poked his chest, just above his heart. “I don’t trust that anymore.” I put my head down on the head table. “Ouch.”

“You okay?” he asked.

“I have more bobby pins and shit in my hair than hair,” I grumbled. I sat back, trying to reach for the champagne flute. “Edward!”

“Let’s get some coffee and some fresh air, Bells,” he said, taking my hand and gently pulling me to my feet. I stumbled out of my heels, sticking my tongue out at the implements of torture. “You’re so done.”

“I was done after Pastor Weber said, ‘I do,’” I huffed, following Edward out into the cool night air, overlooking the sound. It was early summer and chilly in the evening. I shivered, crossing my arms over my chest and staring sightlessly at the water. Tears welled in my eyes at what I’d lost six months ago when Jacob had betrayed me in the most ultimate way. “Why did he do it, Edward? Why did Jake throw me away?”

“I can’t give you a definitive answer, Bella,” he answered quietly, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. “I’m not Jake. But it’s his loss for losing one of the most amazing people I know.”

“I thought I was done with dating,” I sighed, leaning my head against his shoulder. “I put up a profile on Tinder … So. Many. Unsolicited. Dick. Pics.” I shuddered, wrinkling my nose. “Gross. Why do guys think that women want to see a picture of their junk?”

“Because, it’s what men want to see,” Edward replied. He led me to a bench and slid off his tuxedo jacket, draping it over my body. “Don’t go onto those awful sites.”

“How else am I supposed to get dates?” I asked. “At work, there are three eligible men, including you. While I think you’re hot, we’re friends. I don’t want to mess up our friendship.”

“I feel like a side a beef,” Edward deadpanned. “I can whip out my cock for an unsolicited dick experience.”

“I’m drunk, but not that drunk,” I snorted. “If it weren’t for you and Alice, I wouldn’t have gotten through the dark time after Jake … I really don’t want to lose that. You’re one of my best friends, Edward.”

“Just like you’re mine, Bells. Hell, you saved me from Tanya and Peter,” he grumbled.

“Tanya and her diseased snatch can stay up in Alaska,” I snarled. “And Peter? He was a two-faced lying liar who lies about everything. He was married and had two kids, all while professing his love to you?”

“Let’s just say a little bird shared all about our relationship to Peter’s wife,” Edward smirked, arching a brow over his frames.

“You didn’t?”

“Jasper, using his hacking for good, sent Peter’s wife incriminating pictures of all of Peter’s indiscretions. I was one of many,” he shrugged. “In a way, I’m with you. I’m over the whole dating scene. There’s no quality out there.” We sat in quiet, listening to the water gently lap against the shore. Music from my sister’s wedding floated around us, bathing us in sappy romantic love songs. “Can I make a suggestion?”

“What’s that?” I asked. “We get more alcohol?”

“No,” he replied flatly. “Just think about this … we’re both thirty.”

“No, you’re thirty. We celebrated your thirtieth birthday a couple of weeks ago, getting sloshed at the Mariner’s game. I’m still in my twenties,” I argued, batting my eyes at him.

“I’m older than you by four months, Isabella Marie,” he growled, poking my side. “So, you will be thirty in September …”

“Don’t make me pummel you with my heels,” I grumped.

“They’re under the head table, Bella. Focus on me,” he sighed. “We try dating, but if we don’t have anyone who gives us the ‘tingles’ …” Edward looked at me, giving me a shy, crooked grin. “We try it. We get married.”

May We Meet Again Teaser

"Bella, my sweet girl, you did amazing work with Alice," Mom said as I worked on Mr. Murphy's head wound. We gave him a mild sedative, which knocked him out. He was snoring loudly as I worked on suturing the laceration closed. "You are a born healer."

"I'm a healer, but when it comes to psychological issues, I'm a mess," I said quietly, cleaning Mr. Murphy's wound of blood. "My mind keeps thinking of what could have happened … you know? I think Alice might have the same problem when she regains consciousness."

"You focused your studies on general medicine, not psychology. You took some of the basic classes, but you don't have the training I have. I do need to impart my knowledge on to someone, but from what I've heard, you might be struggling with PTSD. Hell, most of you are dealing with post-traumatic stress. I'm so sorry for that."

"It's not your fault, Mom," I said, covering Mr. Murphy's head wound.

"I didn't help the situation," she sighed. "But, we'll get you all the help you need. I promise you that."

"Thanks, Mom," I whispered. Edward walked back into medical. "Did your dad get back to the garage?"

"Yeah," he nodded. "He got turned around once, but we got him to Rover III with time to spare. How's my sister?"

"Physically, she'll make a full recovery," Mom explained. "Psychologically, I'll have to work with her once she's in a place to talk about what happened to her."

"Did you show her the tablet?" Edward asked me.

"I offered it to my mom, but she'd rather hear it from Alice," I replied. "Mom, do you want to get cleaned up and settled into your suite?"

"Suite?" Mom asked.

"We have enough room for you," Edward said, reaching into his pocket and producing a swipe card for her. "You're in suite four twelve, which is up a floor to the left when you get off the elevator. You're on the same floor as Bella and me. There's enough room for you and the Chancellor."

My mom's eyes welled with tears, squeezing Edward's hand. "The Chancellor didn't make it. He …" She pressed her hand on Edward's shoulder. "Excuse me." She disappeared in the bathroom in the medical bay, quiet sobs filling the room.

"No, that won't work for my client," Edward said in his sleek office overlooking Puget Sound. "You and I both know that his next contract should be at least double of what he currently has. He's got offers from across the country. But, being a hometown boy, he'd like to stay with the Seahawks." He listened to the other person on the other end of the line. "That's a much substantial offer. I'll bring it to my client. We'll be in touch."

Ending the call, he sent a text to his client, informing him about the new offer and he closed his computer. Placing it into his bag, he slung the bag over his body and walked to Alice's office. "I'm off. I've got kid duty today since Bella's at the gym late tonight."

"Give my godchildren kisses, Masen," Alice sang.

"You do the same with mine, Alice," Edward chuckled.

"I will, once they're born. These twins are using my bladder as a punching bag," Alice grumbled, rubbing her huge stomach. "I can't wait until I can see my feet again."

"They're still there, Ali," Edward smirked. "Have a good weekend." He walked through the office, waving at Jasper before he got in the elevator. He strode to his black Range Rover, sliding into the driver's seat and backed out of the spot. He drove to the elementary school where his two children attended.

Bella and Edward didn't want a long engagement. About a month after he proposed on the beach, they got married on the same beach, using Charlie's backyard as their reception venue. Within two months of being married, Bella got pregnant. Their first child, a boy named Patrick, was born on St. Patrick's Day. Their second baby, a girl named Elizabeth, was born a year later on April first. With the birth of Elizabeth, Edward got a vasectomy because they were happy with two children.

"I think that's the last box," Bella said, wiping her hands on her jeans. She took a look around the new home that she and Edward purchased together. It was on Bainbridge Island, just around the corner from where Emmett and Rosalie lived. It was Rose who told Bella about the place, and they jumped at the chance to purchase it. The timing of the sale, though, was chaotic, to say the least. "What were we smoking when we pulled the trigger on buying this place?"

"We wanted something bigger," Edward replied, adjusting a frame on the wall. "Your home on Mercer Island was great, but it had only two bedrooms with a loft." He walked over to her, pulling her into his arms. "You love this new place."

"I do, but I'm never moving again. We're never moving," she said, poking him in the chest. "We're dying in this house."

"No one's dying anytime soon, angel," Edward snorted, kissing her nose. "Have you heard from Rose today?"

"She sent a text. She hates being on bed rest, but her blood pressure is too high. They may induce labor as early as today," Bella replied. "Princess Hannah will be her sooner rather than later."

"That little girl is going to be so spoiled," Edward laughed. "How many outfits have we gotten for her?"

"I want my niece to be the best dressed baby on the planet," Bella scoffed, giving him a wry smile. "Anyway, I have to go into Bull Dog. I need to finalize travel plans for Brady, Collin and the new guy, Trevor, for the fight in Las Vegas. Have you worked with Trevor?"

"I have. He's got some fast hands and excellent footwork. I can see him going far," Edward grinned. "We sparred when he 'tried out' for Charlie. I won, but it was a close call." He sat down on the couch in their family room. Bella sat down on his lap. She trailed her fingers down his cheek. "I think I'm going to announce my retirement soon. Charlie's getting queries about when I'm fighting again …"

"Hey, Bells," Lauren smiled from her spot in the command center. "How are things?"

I walked over to her, sitting down and scrubbing my face. "Stressed, to be honest. Did you hear about the visitor who appeared like a forest fairy from the Drop Ship?"

"There was a hubbub about someone arriving, but not who," Lauren said, her smile falling. "Where they injured?"

"Yeah, but I can't really say much since I want to protect their privacy," I explained. "Long story short, things are not okay at the Drop Ship."

"I can imagine," Lauren sighed. "The Drop Ship had some tech, but not a lot. Plus, the people who remained back there were not the smartest tools in the shed, especially with Jacob as their leader. He doesn't seem like a planner like you and Edward. If it weren't for you two, we'd be a mess and still be searching for this installation. You know?"

"Thank you, Lauren," I said. "I don't know how much I needed to hear that. There are moments where I feel like I have no clue what I'm doing."

"I beg to differ. You got us here," she began, ticking off the positives. "You set up a working government and an amazing community in the mountain. We don't feel like prisoners from the Sky Box. We feel like a family. Plus? You've got an amazing partner with Edward. He clearly adores you. He'd give everything to protect you. Hell, it was because of him that we're down here."

"I'm grateful for Edward … in more ways than one," I whispered, sitting down next to her. "He was a friend when I needed a friend. He gave me human contact when I felt isolated from the world. And, now? He's my best friend and so much more … I can't imagine not loving him."

"Wait, you love him?" Lauren asked.

"Very much so," I blushed. "The way I told him wasn't the most romantic, but it worked for us."

"We're going outside and it's snowing. Why are we going outside while it's snowing, Edward?" Bella grumbled.

"Because it's pretty and you wanted to see the city, love," Edward answered, wrapping his scarf around his neck.

"Can't we come back in the spring or summer?" Bella pouted, tugging on a beanie, covering her mahogany curls. "I want to see the city, but not at the risk of losing my fingers due to frostbite."

"You're spoiled with the weather in Seattle, Bella," Edward deadpanned. "I grew up in the northern tundra of Chicago. This is nothing. When I was in middle school, we have about three feet of snow dumped on us. We were off of school for four days because of snowpacalypse." Tugging on his gloves, he gently turned her. "I'll keep you warm, angel. I promise."

"We can stay warm in bed," she quipped, kissing his jaw.

"First stop on our tour is Ground Zero, Bella. Let's go," he pressed, grabbing her hands.

It had been a couple days since the fight. Charlie and the rest of the Bull Dog family left after Alice issued their statement regarding the findings about Jacob and the Volturi. With that announcement, ESPN wanted to interview Edward, but he asked for time to process. They made tentative plans to meet up at Bull Dog within a week. It would give him an opportunity to pull his thoughts together and not lose his shit on camera.

Today was going to be a day for them to play. It was not about Edward training for a fight or Bella keeping Bull Dog afloat. It was about two people having fun, getting lost in New York City. Since Edward was still sore from his fight, he asked for a car to shuttle them from each location. They rode down to the lobby, getting into the waiting limo. The driver pulled away from the curb, weaving through traffic and arriving at Ground Zero.

Everything was secured and Charlie was in the command center, preparing for our departure. I was strapped in, squeezed in between Carlisle and Aro's orphaned son, Demetri. Demetri's hand was in mine as I tried not to cry. To be honest, it was a losing battle with tears welling. I stared, unseeingly at the bulkhead in the surgical bay.

"Swan to Ark Station, thrusters will deploy in T-minus five minutes," Charlie's disembodied voice said through the intercom system. "Make sure everyone is strapped in." There was a pause and he let out a breath. "May we meet again …"

"May we meet again," I whispered back. "We will find each other again, Charlie." My eyes fluttered shut as tears streaked down my cheeks, the battle lost. "I love you …"

Carlisle took my hand, squeezing my fingers. "We'll figure out a way to get Charlie down to the Ground. I promise you," he murmured. "We did not spend hours and all of our blood stores to put him back together for him to die of hypoxia."

"How can we do that? It's not like there's rockets to get up to the outer ring when we get down to the surface," I hissed angrily. "He's going to die up here."

"We have the most brilliant minds on the Ark, we can figure something out," Carlisle soothed.

"T-minus one minute," Charlie announced. "Ren, hug our baby girl for me."

"I will," I replied, even though he couldn't hear me. I closed my eyes, trying to imagine Charlie in the command center, preparing the Ark for its final departure and descent to the Ground. As the engines roared to life, I slipped my arms around Demetri, providing him comfort when all I wanted was my husband's arms around me giving me comfort.

"Ten … nine … eight … seven … six … five … four … three … two … one … launch," Charlie counted.

Worth the Fight Teaser

Early the next morning, Bella snuck out of the bedroom. Edward, despite being exhausted, tossed and turned. His body took a beating, and he was paying for it now. In the living space, she found Carlisle and Charlie. “Good morning.” She kissed her father’s cheek and smiled at Carlisle. “Can Edward get a massage this morning? He was in pain last night.”

“Take it easy on him,” Carlisle answered. “Avoid the bruises on his body, especially around his ribs. There are some small fractures in the bones.”

“Can he also get some pain killers? He’s not fighting for at least a month. One Vicodin won’t kill him,” Bella huffed.

“I have some, but I’m not going to drug him without his consent,” Carlisle said, checking his watch. “I have a teleconference meeting in an hour. I hate talking over Zoom. I’ll leave some Vicodin with your dad, but don’t push it. Edward is very particular about what he puts in his body.”

“I know,” she nodded. Blinking to her dad, she smirked. “Don’t you have some fighter to train? Or a meeting to go to?”

“Actually, I don’t. I was hoping to spend the day with you and Edward,” Charlie retorted with a shit-eating grin.

“Dad!” Bella huffed. “Really? I don’t think so.”

“He doesn’t,” Carlisle snickered. “He’s actually checking out another fighter to possibly join the Bull Dog family. Your car will be here in ten minutes.” He got up from his spot. “I’m going down to the business center and then I’m meeting Alice and Esme to go out for lunch and an afternoon of shopping.”

“Oooh, have fun,” Bella sang. “Better you than me.”

“I’d rather have a hip replacement without being sedated,” Carlisle grumbled, picking up his computer bag as he left.

Edward and I sprinted back to Mount Weather. Upon our arrival, we saw a puddle of blood on the concrete near the garage. It was a lot of blood and if the person walked from the drop ship, they'd lost significantly more on the way. I stepped in front of Edward, rubbing his arms. He was tense. The muscles in his jaw ticked and his verdant gaze was unseeing. "Edward, look at me," I whispered. "Please …?"

"She's going to die," he choked out brokenly. "My sister … I won't get to know her … With that much blood."

"You don't know that," I said. "I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure that she'll be okay. It might take time, but you have to trust me. Do you trust me?"

"With my life," he answered. "You're the only person I trust to save her. Please, help her, Bella."

"Then, let me do that," I said, caressing his cheek. He captured my hand, pressing a kiss to my palm. Standing on my tiptoes, I brushed my lips over his and took his hand, tugging on it. "Come with me. Let's go down to medical." I blinked to Emmett, giving him a look. "Can you clean that up?"

"Sure thing, Bella," Emmett nodded. "She stumbled in from the south, collapsing as soon as she hit the concrete. This tiny thing appeared like a ghost, covered in blood, leaves and dirt. She couldn't talk, only grunting and pointing at the door. I radioed Austin, who came up with a team and brought her down to medical."

"I'm heading down there now. Thank you, Emmett," I said. I squeezed Edward's hand, leading him into the mountain and down to the medical unit. Austin was down in medical and was monitoring the patient. Edward's fingers tightened around mine. His breath hitched as he gently tugged me to stop. "What is it, Edward?"

"It's Alice," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "She has a birthmark on her left arm that's in the shape of heart. It's there." He walked over to her swollen arm, indicating to small heart-shaped blemish on her tanned skin.
